A rare opportunity to see a recently discovered Edo-period UFO painting for free near Tokyo!
Utsuro-bune(うつろ舟)
The "Okada Documents," a city-designated cultural property, consists of approximately 4,900 ancient documents that were passed down through the Okada family of Nakazato Village (present-day Nakazato, Kuki City) during the Edo period, and were donated to the city in March 2025. Among these Okada Documents was an ancient document concerning the "Utsuro-bune" a mysterious boat that has been the subject of much debate to this day.
A " Utsuro-bune" is a boat made from a hollow piece of wood, and there are various records of them washing ashore on Japanese beaches, but the one that drifted ashore on a beach in what is now Ibaraki Prefecture in February 1803 is particularly famous. The boat had glass windows, was coated with pine resin, and had strange characters written on it.
It is also said that a woman who appeared to be a foreigner was inside the boat, carrying a box. It became a major topic of conversation when it was widely introduced in contemporary documents and was recorded in various parts of Japan.
This document depicts a shape resembling two bowls stacked on top of each other, a boat window, strange characters, and drawings of people. It is believed to be a written record of news based on hearsay and other information from that time.
It is unknown what this " Utsuro-bune" actually was. Many believe that the news of its arrival was merely a fictional story, but there is also a theory that the woman on board was a goddess associated with sericulture.
Just as the " Utsuro-bune" might look like a UFO to modern eyes, many people might feel a sense of romance in the idea that the people of that time also encountered something truly unknown. We don't know the truth, but it might be fun to speculate about it.
